Context
I created a publication documenting my grandfather’s practice of traditional Chinese herbal medicine and his recommendations for different medical symptoms, with the addition of telling my family’s intricate immigration story and how they built a legacy with their Chinese apothecary, An Hing Co.
Additional Thoughts
I wanted to capture both the technical and sentimental aspects of store, so I organized different body parts/ailments and its respective herbal supplement as recommended by my grandfather and dedicated the second half of the book to my family’s story. This way, I could invoke emotions from the readers while giving them space to learn something new.
Publication Details
The form of the book is informed by the contents to further enhance the reader’s experience. I wanted this publication to embody the organic and raw nature of the herbs, so I opted for stab binding and printed on 32 lb. linen paper for the rough texture and fading colors of the corners. I used a Japanese screw puncher to do the stab binding and used threaded wax to hold it all together.
The physical book is 7x9 inches, but the true size is 6x9, because I had to compensate an inch for the binding.
